Live music performance

Brief:

Your school is hosting an awards ceremony for local community organisations. You have been asked to provide a 10-15 minute performance appropriate to the event.

Your work: Must be suitable for the audience
If you work as a group each candidate in the group must be able to show their contribution. Each candidate will be assessed individually.

TASK 1 Planning

1.     My statement of personal aims:

Through my contribution to the event I would like to achieve the following goals:

  • Firstly show off my vocal range and my ability to choose songs which can enhance this.
  • Secondly, I want to show my ability to work well with another student to perform and practice a duet.
  • Thirdly, i would like to be able to show confidence on stage and have an engaging stage presence.
  • Lastly, I want to show off my vocal ability and technique.

I think that I have the following skills which I will use to help me achieve these goals……

Singing and in particular vocal warm ups to strengthen both ends of my range and also to strengthen my breathing and use of breath. I do vocal warm ups often and especially in my singing lessons.
I will show off my ability to work well with people in 2 ways. Firstly I am doing a duet with Amber and together we will have to figure out harmonies and places where one of us or both of us sing. I take drama which is a lot about working in a team so i can use my negotiation skills and my ability to listen to everyone and be fair with ideas. Drama will also help me with the confidence to have a stage presence as i can create a character for each song and aim to portray their emotions.

I will know if I’ve achieved it because……

I will gain a merit or above, hopefully a distinction and this will show that I matched the brief well and to a high standard. Also I will know in myself if on the day I am disappointed, satisfied or ecstatic about my performance after I have performed. If the audience looks engaged and as if they are enjoying my performance then I will know I have for filled my target of having a good stage presence and performance.
The duet will go successfully and we will practice together to get it right and this will show my cooperation skills with other people.
Showing off my range will be completed through choosing a set list which will highlight as many of  the strong points in my voice as I can.

How I will meet the expectations of the audience:

Firstly, I have considered the fact that 2 or 3 long songs aren't as engaging to an audience as 4 shorter songs. This is because I can do 4 songs that differ from each other In either tempo or genre.
I would like to do as close too 15 minuets as possible as this gives me time to show off what I can do.
Songs that will be the most suitable will include songs in a major key and clean/ appropriate to perform to all ages as it is respectable.

2.     Plan of my contribution to the performance

The requirements of the brief and how I will meet them:
Our brief is 10-15 minuets of songs which are suitable for an audience at an awards ceremony. The songs have to be appropriate for all ages. I will choose 4 songs to get to as close too 15 minuets as possible.
Also I am going to imagine in my awards ceremony I am representing my school in front of other schools.

What I intend to do:
The song I intend to open with is "Bridge Over Troubled Water" by Simon and Garfunkel. It is just my solo voice and a backing track and from that my intentions are to start off with a powerful opening to excite and engage the audience.

I wish to end with a duet with Amber, we will sing "A Whole New World" from Aladin. This is a different genre complete;y to my other songs. It is the ending song as it has such a lovely sound and aswell as ending my set, it begins Ambers set.

How I will do it:
Amber and I will plan a time slot during the lessons/ rehearsal time to practice our song. I am going to do recordings of myself and be heavily critical of firstly ever lie of the song to try and get both breathing and notes right and once i've done that i will record it with movement as well so I can meet my aim of being confident and engaging on stage.Around 2-3 weeks before our performance I wish to perform my set to people in my class who can give me feedback to work on for the final performance. I will also do rehearsals on the stage space making sure I incorporate movement and know how the stage has to be set up.

Who I will need to involve:
Amber for out duet, and others including Ella to give me feedback and constructive criticism in order to get my songs to the best of my ability. The tech team also to help with the stage and electric set up and then for them to help playing the backing tracks and keeping the mic and music levels at a balance during the dress rehearsal.

The resources I will need:
Recording devices like phones so i can self evaluate in order to make progress mainly on my vocals and techniques on order to complete 2 of my targets about confidence and the vocal range as critical practice could perfect these.

The time needed for each song/ activity:
The most time I think needed will be bridge over troubled water as it is a very gorgeous song and I need to find the perfect backing track to suit my voice and to do it justice. Followed by Wrecking Ball as timing will need to be worked on hard as with the backing track I have chosen isn't easy. Both the duet with amber and we are the champions will need work but not as much as I know both songs very well and Amber and I have been doing this duet together for over a year.

Health and safety issues for rehearsals and the performances:
The cables need to be run and placed in areas that people wont be walking like against the walls. Also the music can't be too loud or overpowering as this damages peoples hearing. When everyone's working together around the wires and technology, we all have to be sensible so no one knocks anything over. People also have to be careful on the stage so no one falls off, this means carefully placing the wires where people wont be standing or walking.

My set list:

1. "Bridge Over Troubled Water" by Simon and Garfunkel. - Strong, beautiful song to start and grab audience attention.
2."Wrecking Ball" (Piano version) By Miley Cyrus.
3. "We are the Champions" by Queen.
3. "A Whole New World" from the Disney film Aladdin. Sung with Amber Sparshott.

Style and Image:

As I was going to be representing my school in connection to the brief i felt that school uniform was suitable and smart enough for such occasion. I will also do my hair and makeup nicely/ appropriately as this firstly makes me feel more confident and secondly it gives the audience a more aesthetically pleasing view to watch.

Ideas for the performance:

I will line up any music tracks that are needed in the correct order so they tech people know which song to play in what order. I will also ask them to put their thumb up as they press play on the songs so i can have the timings correctly when singing as a couple songs have awkward introductions.

Staging and equipment needs:
I will need is a mic and a mic stand and all the extras like amps, speakers and jack leads to connect all of these up. I will also need an ipad for the backing tracks and an aux lead to connect it too the speakers.

Not a huge amount of space will be needed, only enough for speakers, an amp 2 mic stands ( one for me one for Amber) and a few meters of stage space for me to move about so I can follow my target of having a lot of stage presence. The two mics will be at the front of the stage just left and just right of centre.

Rehearsal Schedule

Rehearsal 1: 4th January (CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT)
PLAN: To decide and finalise my set list. Also to do a vocal warm up to especially warm up the bottom of my voice as I knew that the majority of my songs really worked the bottom of my songs hard.
REALITY: I finalised half of my set list which I wrote into my blog. Other possibilities have been practiced and explored so I can finalise them for after christmas. I asked my friends and a teacher to help me decide between two songs which were very similar. These songs were Bridge over troubled water (By Simon and Garfunkel) or Hallelujah (by Alexandra Burke). It was decided that even tho it is the harder of the two, that I'd do Bridge over troubled water. This is because out of the two songs Bridge over troubled water is less used and powerful. A vocal warm up also happened.

Over christmas
My main plan for my personal rehearsal time was to sing and listen to a lot of tracks. From this choose a couple songs in which i can choose between at school. Songs I that I listened to include Mama Do (by Pixie Lott), Four simple words (by Frank Turner) and Writings on the Wall (by Sam smith).
I felt like Writings on the wall was too similar to bridge over troubled water, in the sense of they're both very powerful in places and focus mainly on my lower range of my voice. I want to show off my range so choosing another song was a better idea to achieve this target.

Rehearsal 2: 5th January (CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT)
Plan: To decide a setlist but with room for improvements and begin to find backing tracks which work best with my vocal strengths and also focusing on length. Vocal strengths meaning even though my vocal range is large, I would like to base songs on where my chest voice and head voice can float together well over notes.
Reality: Today i focused on Bridge over troubled water and recorded my first version of it. There were a number of realisations which occurred from this, one being it was too low and I needed to find a better backing track. The rest of my evaluation from the recording is with the recording a little below this. I needed to decide between "Hallelujah" by Leona Lewis and "Bridge over Troubled Water" by Simon and Garfunkel to be in my setlist. I asked the opinions of two of the girls that would have been in the audience and my teacher and all three of them said Bridge over troubled water for a couple of reasons. Firstly because they feel it is a nicer song but also because Hallelujah is a more used song and I wanted to go with something different. So I took their advice as they are my audience and I need to take into consideration what they like.
Rehearsal 3: 12th January (CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT)
Plan: To work on we are the champions and the duet with Amber.
Reality: Both of which I did. I found a good backing track which will work well if I work on the timings, I started that this lesson. I know the lyrics so I just need to work mainly on timing to start off with and then I can put techniques into how I am singing. The practice of the duet went well, there are no real things we need to work on we just need to practice it every couple of weeks to make sure we still remember it.
Rehearsal 4: 19th January (CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT) - 2 hours due to theatre trip next week
Plan: To continue working on my songs and finding the right backing tracks to perform these with.
Reality: I began by listening to my first recording of Bridge over troubled water and concluded that this version was too low for me and that I also needed to find an instrumental track. From this I began trying out other backing tracks which were a higher pitch. I found one which worked and I worked on it for 10 minuets. I then did a first recording of this version so I could figure out what I need to work on the most ti improve it. I also decided to cut it as the instrumental is too long and if I cut It then there wold be enough time to put another song in and I can get closer to the brief expectations. This also means I have a chance in another song to complete all my targets and show off a different part of my voice. So I decided to do a piano version of wrecking ball, I found a backing track and practiced it once. So at home I am going to continue to work on it.
Rehearsal 5: 26th January (CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT)

I was on a trip to the west end with school so I missed this rehersal. Howver I did two hours controlled assessment last week and at home I made sure time was spent in practicing my timings with the backing tracks which was my target from the previous lesson.
Rehearsal 6: 2nd February (CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT)
Plan: To record wrecking ball, we are the champions and mine and ambers duet, A whole new world.
Reality: All three of these were recorded. I made sure practice was put in before so i knew all of the timings.
DRESS REHEARSAL ON STAGE and rehearsal in practice room: 8th February (2 hours)

Rehearsal 7: 9th February (CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT)
Plan: Go over all of my recordings from the dress rehearsal and work on any improvements that are needed.
Reality: I did exactly that. What I wished to work on is in more detail in my dress rehearsal evaluation. So i began working on some of the most important improvements like timing and breathing and i left the rest for practice at home.

PERFORMANCE: WEDNESDAY 22nd February (CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT)

5th January first recording of Bridge over troubled water.

Evaluation of first recording
The first part that needs changing is the track I'm singing against because it has vocals on it and is too low at certain points. This version of the song will not show my voice at its full potential which means I will be unable to complete my target about showing off my vocal skills. To change this I will need to find a backing track with no vocals which is also at a higher pitch, so this will be one of my main focuses for my next lesson so I can as soon as possible get the timing and all the other aspects of the song right to make it sound as close to perfect as I can.

The one part of the song that is positive is that I know all of the words and roughly have all the vocals down, all I need to do is transpose it up, but that wont be a problem for me.

Teacher's feedback

  • Warming up the voice to the range of the song.
  • Timing
  • The backing track was too low at points.
I will complete these by:
  • Low, high and breathing warm ups/ exercises.
  • Working hard taking sections of the song and practicing these until my timing is perfect on each section.
  • Finding a new and higher backing track.

19th January second recording of Bridge over troubled water.

Evaluation:

Firstly, on this day I just started with this backing track so i knew it wasn't going to be perfect however i recorded so soon as I wanted to know where i needed to improve so theses improvements could start being put into place to complete all of my targets.

I feel this was definitely an improvement on the first recording I did for a number of reasons.
Firstly, because I had a better suited backing track to my voice as it was at a higher pitch, so this means now I can complete my target of presenting my vocal ability and technique. With this version of the song it accentuates, what I think, is the best part of my voice.
Secondly, I ended up cutting the song for a couple of reasons, because the instrumental in the middle was too long and if I cut it before this point I'd have enough time too perform another song as well.

Something to work on will be timing and tone of my voice, If I can perfect both of these I will be a lot more confident and consequently I can complete my target of having stage presence as I can focus more on movement and a character.

If I continue to improve and work on this song I am expecting my performance to hit all my targets and also sound beautiful.

Evaluation

Evaluation

I need to work on my belt voice to make it as strong as possible in the loudest sections of this song. I know all of the words so that isn't a problem so as soon as all of the notes and vocal strength are worked on then all I need to focus on is performance technique. After all of these are perfected my performance as a whole should be confident and should hit my targets well. I will incorporate a bit of movement and I am thinking of taking the mic off the stand so I can more round more and have more expression.

Evaluation

Overall I was happy with this recording, there were no major problems that stood out too me. However, I am going to continue to focus on vocal technique to make it sound as amazing as it can be and so the blend with mine and Amber's vocals sound good.

Performers External Assessment Task 3 (Feb 2017)
Dress Rehearsal Evaluation

Strengths Reflection:

*The tech ran smoothly the majority of the time. My songs were played in the correct order and most had the right balance of sound.

*I loved the duet and i thought it sounded lovely, all notes and lyrics were right and we were both confident.
*In my opinion (not biased at all), my vocal tone and top notes in bridge over troubled water sounded beautiful in the recording.
*Similar to this but in all of my songs, the vibrato enhanced my vocals and showed off vocal technique, it also made what i was singing sound more interesting and technical.
*I felt I had clear diction throughout the majority of my pieces and this works well along side my vocal tone to have a gorgeous sound.
*The belt in my voice was mainly strong and I was very pleased in how it sounded in the recording.

Improvement Reflection:

I need to improve on how I introduce myself and the pieces.
My confidence slightly lacked as i wasn't fully sure on lyrics due to nerves mainly.
There were a few breathing problems in Wrecking ball, with breaths in the middle of phrases.

Improvement #1: Introducing myself and the piece.
Strategy: How could you make that improvement?:
I would like to have a lighter and happier tone to my voice so when I'm speaking people are interested, this will bu8ild up my full performance as if i disengage the audience before i have even sung then that means my target of having stage presence will be failed.

Improvement #2: Learn lyrics fully.
Strategy: How could you make that improvement?:
Go home and take each song at a time. I will start by getting lyrics versions up on the tv on youtube and sing at least 3 times through with the lyrics. Then, I will turn around and see how far i can get without forgetting any lyrics. Once I go through without forgetting lyrics at least twice or three time then I will repeat with all my other songs. I will also perform in front of anyone I can find to perform infront of to become more confident and to shake away nerves before my real performance.

Improvement #3: Breathing in Wrecking ball.
Strategy: How could you make that improvement?:
I need to find better places to breath and attempt to hold certain breaths for longer. For this to work i will have to practice and on the day make sure i do a couple of things. These being that when on stage I need to take deeper breaths by opening my mouth wider and dropping my tongue, then i will tense the muscles in my diaphragm for more power and a less breathy sound.

Feedback from others:

Positives

All of the following I am going to make sure I continue this in my final performance to show of vocal technique:
*Good vibrato in all 3 of my solo songs.
*Bridge over troubled water is beautiful, clear diction and lovely tone.
*Top notes nice in all of them.
*Nice tone for all of the songs.
*Strong vocals.
*Hit the right pitches.
*We are the champions, strong start and a wonderful belt.
*Vocals really smooth, engaging and accurate.

The following points show that the audience connected with me on stage which means I have been successful with stage presence:
*Confident stage presence.
*Communication was clear.
*Kept confident and carried on when there was distractions.
*The songs suit the lack of movement.

Improvements

The following can be improved with practice:
*Came in late on bridge over troubled water, also needs to be confident with the lyrics.
*Breaths in the middle of phrases on Wrecking ball, find better places for breathing.
*Learn lyrics fully

*A couple of insecure notes, this can be improved with a warm up and more practice.

The following can be improved on for next time through a convocation with the tech team so none of these problems occur in the real thing:
*The backing track stopped suddenly which made it sound messy
*The mic stand was too high up, that needs to be sorted.
*Music was too loud at some points.
*We are the champions, music too quiet at the beginning.

How this feedback helped with my evaluation of the performance:

As I was on stage, I wasn't able to hear what the audience heard, volume and sound balance wise. So them telling me what was good and what needs to be improved on, for example the backing track being too quiet, means that the tech team and I can come up with a way to fix these problems.
They also helped me spot slight and easily worked on flaws in my technique for example my breathing wasn't correct on Wrecking ball, because of this I can now practice and perfect this as I did not spot it myself before.

Finally, I was told about making sure I warm up properly, this was something that admittedly not on my mind before the performance so I'm sure if my voice is looser and warmed up, notes will be easier to hit and I can show off my technique.

Conclusion:

The video and sound quality wasn't amazing however this will be changed too enhance what the examiner can see of the performance.
Overall I was pleased with my performance but I was also pleased that some things went wrong as this will allow me to put effort in too make everything better to hit my targets and get the highest grade possible.
I will continue working on my pieces and with the tech team to get everything as close to perfect as I can as I am aiming high and I love performing. I will be annoyed with myself if it doesn't go well so concequently I will work hard over the needwo weeks to get the highest grade I can.

FINAL PERFORMANCE

TASK 3 Evaluation

Strengths Reflection:

*Firstly I came just under 15 minuets which is good as I timed what I did well and it matched the brief.
*Overall I felt the sound levels and balance was successful. I could hear backing tracks and consequently stayed in time

*Vibrato notes i added into it for effect and to make it interesting as i enjoy singing with a vibrato and I feel it makes my vocals sound lovely.
*During bridge over troubled water I loved singing the high notes and I thought I had a lovely tone to them which proved that I chose the right song (one of my targets) as I could execute this well.
*I LOVED my belt in we are the champions. I was worried that it could sound shouty but after I listened to my recording back I was pleased it didn't and it just made my voice look powerful.
*I had no major mess ups at all and this made me more confident as time went on while I was onstage, this meant my performance levels and stage presence were at a high level as i felt comfortable onstage, Thus hitting my targets of wanting to prove I had a good stage presence.
*My technical accuracy in songs in my opinion was very strong and definitely hit my target by adding vibrato and the smoothness of top notes for example.

Improvement Reflection:

*I missed one line and ended coming in part way through it which annoyed me a lot as I know the whole song fully.
*There was a slight uncertain weak start to bridge over troubled water, but I think this is because it was my first song I sang and I was a little nervous. However I think I picked this back up very quickly and performed well
*My transitions in wrecking ball were a bit messy and shaky at certain moments, mainly at the point after coming out of the first chorus to the verse as it is very abrupt.

Improvement #1: The transitions were messy in wrecking ball.
Strategy: How could you make that improvement?:
To make this better I'd either find a better backing track next time (although it was difficult the first time to find a good backing track) or I'd make it work and figure out breathing patterns and timings.

Improvement #2: The overall feel and communication of a whole new world.
Strategy: How could you make that improvement?:
Maybe a little bit more communication between amber and I on stage was needed, we could have looked at eachother more, even turned too eacher. Maybe it would have been more effedctive if we had the mics off the stand so we could have moved more freely and interacted with eachother more to portray the story of the song.

Improvement #3: Uncertain start to wrecking ball.
Strategy: How could you make that improvement?:
To change this and make sure it wasn't uncertain, i could have done a few breathing exercises before I went on stage to calm my nerve and had water to lubricate my throat so notes would come out easier and so they don't end up sounding forceful from beginning nerves.

Feedback from others:

Strengths:

The following feedback i got completed both my targets of choosing songs which show off my vocal skills and successfully showing off vocal strength and techniques:
*Breathing was very well controlled, This enhanced my vocal control.
*There was good support in the upper notes of bridge over troubled water, i am pleased this was picked up on as this means all the work on all the different sections and the vocal technique i worked on really shone through.
*In wrecking ball i had good projection and it worked as it is a loud song. The belt section was successful and the higher notes of the song were really nice. Again, them picking up different sections of other song that i worked on pleased me and it completes my targets if people have noticed these.
*We are the champions had amazing strong vocals, i wanted to work on the belt and i was very happy that it worked out. I was worried that it might have sounded shouty however this was never picked up on by anyone so it must have just had strong technically good belt sections.
*In bridge over troubled water an audience member picked up on the vibrato notes i added into it for effect and to make it interesting as i enjoy singing with a vibrato and i feel it makes my vocals sound lovely, they must have also agreed. Also they told me i had a "stunning" top note!
*The same audience member seemed to LOVE we are the champions as their reaction was "POWERFUL, OH MY GOD! AND YOUR VIBRATO, WOW!" This pleased me as knowing your vocals made someone that happy and excited shows that they must have been very strong and that my hard work payed off!
*I was also told by another audience member that my high notes on bridge over troubled water gave them shivers! I loved this feedback as beautiful high vocals always give me shivers so this must mean that I definitely hit my vocal tone target.

The following feedback completed my target of having a good stage presence to engage the audience:
*In bridge over troubled water i was told I had a "beautiful" stage presence and facial expressions. For them to notice facial expressions means they were really focusing and engaged while I was performing this song.
*Also in wrecking ball i was told i had lovely facial expressions, so again this shows they were engaged with me especially when i tried to make eye contact with the audience.
*An audience member also commented on my "strong emotion" and good gesture. They then went on to saying this meant i communicated well with the audience by doing this.
*My stage presence and communication was applauded by another audience member in we are the champions and another said I had very good engaging body language and movement.

The following points completed my target of working well in a duo:
*Really beautiful collab was said by an audience member, they then went on to complementing up on our lovely and well thought out harmonies.
*Another audience member said similar, saying they adored the harmonies and complimented us saying how we both sang beautifully together

Improvements

These improvements are what, if I did it again id focus on from what was noticed by the audience.
*In bridge over troubled water some of the parts were mumbled, so i need to work on my diction.
*Transitions were a bit messy between the verses and the choruses, I believe this was due to the fact the backing track was a piano cover on youtube and it cut down some of the transitions weirdly.
*In we are the champions, the music was still too loud in places. To improve this I think the communicated needed to be slightly clearer with the tech team and I.
*In a whole new world the mic was too low but that was my fault as I put it back on the stand after taking it off for we are the champions and didn't consider it to be a problem while on stage.
*There was a wire on the stairs which was a health and safety hazard however I didn't use that as a walkway but it should not have been there.
*During Wrecking ball it was said that I played with my hair too much, I did that for effect to show my uncertain emotions however the audience didn't understand that interpretation so that will not be included if tit was to be done again.

6. How did this feedback help with your evaluation of the performance? e.g. what did they notice and comment on that you didn’t realise/know/think about?

Overall i could like each individual piece of positive feedback too completing targets. Also the improvements I was given shows mainly what i worked on was successful but if i was to do it again there are still a small few certain areas that could be worked on.
For example little details like diction I never spotted or think about. This is because I am usually told i have very good diction, but this might have just been because of nerves. However i can turn this into a positive and make it an area I make sure I focus on in future performances.

Conclusion:

Overall I was extremely pleased with how everything came together from the tech to the set list to my performance.
I felt like I had a good stage presence and a lot of emotion put into it. By putting the emotion in I felt i connected to the audience well and portrayed the characters in the stories of these individual songs.
I enjoyed working with Amber massively on our duet as we get along very well and our voices, in my opinion, go well together. As we both get along it was very easy for us to come u0p with ideas, practice and feel confident and comfortable on stage.
Finally, the songs that made up my final setlist definitely showed of the strengths in my voice well for different reasons and I am glad I chose these songs and completed my target.

These are just some of the areas that went really well in my opinion.
